Eye protection is the most basic safety measure when using any machine in a shop. Machines throw wood chips, dust, and sometimes sparks that can fly into your eyes in an instant, so wearing safety glasses is essential for preventing eye injuries. Safety glasses with impact-resistant lenses (often with side shields) give clear visibility while shielding the eyes from debris.

Gloves aren’t worn while operating most power tools because they can snag on rotating parts and pull your hand toward the machine, which is a serious hazard. Hard hats are reserved for places with overhead hazards, not typical bench-top or table saw work in a school shop. Ear protection helps with loud tools, but it isn’t required for every machine, and eye protection is the universal safeguard needed for all machinery operation.
